Growing Healthcare Close to Home

Fire Season:

Last weekend Mid Valley Hospital briefly put us on notice that they may have to evacuate due to the B&O Fire, luckily the fire didn’t end up threatening them, but several structures were lost. A different fire took the home of one of our Extended Care team. (Stay tuned for any ways we can help out.) I hope everyone stays safe, and we don’t have more activity.

Rural Hospital Leadership Conference:

Kristy Terzi was asked by the Washington State Hospital Association to present as part of a panel conversation on innovation. Kristy did an amazing job describing the work we are doing related to the opioid epidemic and compassionate treatment. She did a great job representing the work that our care team is doing day-in and day-out, and shared some inspiring successful stories. At the same conference, for the second year in a row, NVH was awarded the Gold Award for the Achievement of Quality Excellence.

Financial Check-In:

It has been a few months since I provided an update on our financial performance. This information is presented in the Board Meetings (and Email Recaps) but as we hit the halfway point of 2026 it is a great time to check-in.

The Good:

  • Volumes and Revenues have been strong lead by ED, Acute Care, and Allied Health: $2.8M more in charges

  • We are profitable through May +$354,000

  • HIM has worked through the backlog of accounts, and reduced their work queue from $4.7M to $2.7M

The Opportunities:

  • Cash has been stable at around 55 days, but we are really hoping to see that grow to create a stronger reserve before the Medicaid cuts in 2027.

  • Volumes in some areas are below budget and below last year

  • Our Accounts Receivable (the money we are waiting to be paid from insurance companies or patients) is still higher than we want

Overall, our efforts to control expenses, improve our revenue cycle functions, and grow volumes have created positive results. In Med Staff this last week I made the connection between the high census and very busy ED days and our financial performance. As we prepare for a lot of uncertainty in 2027 our ability to care for as many patients as possible will make a huge difference in our financial success.

What is Coming Up:
